About the Program
About communication
Turn on the television. Read a newspaper. Listen to the radio, or browse this web site. Each of these activities involves some form of communication. Communication, the use of messages to generate meanings, occurs in everything we do. In our changing society, the means and methods of communication are constantly evolving - but the basic principles of communication remain the same.
The Communication Program will help you learn these communication principles and help you see how applying them will make you more effective in the classroom, in the courtroom, in the boardroom, in the workplace and in every role you play in society.
Communication skills top the lists of prerequisites for personal success both in business and in life. Surveys of businesses and industry rank speaking, listening and critical thinking as three of the top five skills employers seek in potential workers.
About the program
The Communication Program is very visible, articulate part of the department, college, and university. It serves two masters; the oral communication course, a general education requirement for all university students, and the majors/minors within the rhetorical tradition of speech communication. Ranging from the teachers trained in the Iowa Communications Network graduate program to the freshmen taking their first course at college, our program really has broad diversity.
Our students travel across the country to participate in speech and debate competitions. Others represent the university at conferences and programs where research and artistic works are performed.
The faculty is diverse, has broadly respected publications and offices in the various discipline organizations, and maintains strong interactions with our colleagues across the campus and beyond. Service activities range from Human Rights Commissioner to President of the Central States Speech Communication.
Log on to your future with the Communication Program at UNI. You'll learn the communication skills that will make you an effective, successful communicator today - and far into the future!
