Required Courses:

(All participants must take the following two courses)

Russia/Soviet Union (680:121) - 3hrs Interdisciplinary examination of the culture, history, geography, economy, political system, and society of Russia and the Soviet Union, with an emphasis on the fine arts. This course will include excursions to the Hermitage, the Russian Museum, the Summer Palace (Peterhof), St. Peter and Paul Fortress, St. Isaac's Cathedral; tours of St. Petersburg focused on writers (Dostoevsky, Pushkin), musicians (Tchaikovsky, Rimskii-Korsakov), artists (and architecture); as well as concerts, tours of churches, palaces, country estates, an excursion to Novgorod or Izborsk and other cultural activities. This course fulfills Category 1B of the UNI Liberal Arts Core Program. Click here to view the syllabus for Russia/Soviet Union. Student attendance is a required part of the course. Studies in Russian Language and Culture (770:086) - 1hr Introduction to the Russian language and everyday culture. Students will be paired with Russian partners for conversation and to experience daily life firsthand!

Applied Music (540:XXX) - 1 hr Music majors may earn a credit of Applied Music. Students will receive individualized instruction. Contact the following Music Professors Rebecca Burkhardt, Jonathan Chenoweth, Alan Schmitz or Julia Trahan for details.

Communicative Disorders (51C:185g) - 1 hr

Elementary Education and/or Early Childhood Education - 1 hr

Natural Science - 1 hr Natural Science majors may earn one credit in field/research experience. The content of the course will be based on the interest of students and the Russian faculty. Possible topics include:

  • Studies of Physics (880:189)
  • Field Biology (840:174)
  • Chemistry in St. Petersburg (860:159)
  • Applied Mathematics (800:159)

Studio Art (600:198) - 1 hr Art majors may earn one credit of Studio Art or Drawing (I, II or III). Students will receive individuals instruction. Art Education majors may also earn field experience credit to be applied toward requirements for Elementary and Secondary Art Education courses. Meet with Art Professor Jean Petsch or Art Gallery Director Darrell Taylor about this course.

Theatre in St. Petersburg - 1 hr Please speak with either Theatre Professor Cynthia Goatley or Head of the Theatre Department Eric Lange for requirements.

Topics in Literature: Literature in St. Petersburg (770:122g) - 1 hr Open to all majors. Talk to Maria Basom about possible topics.
